  • Severe weather warnings are in force during Sunday for heavy rain for the West Coast of the South Island including the Alps, also for severe northwest gales for eastern regions from Wairarapa and Wellington to Southland.
  • Northland to WanganuiShowers from Auckland northwards, spreading elsewhere during the day, then clearing tomorrow morning. However, expect late rain in Taranaki and Wanganui.
  • Manawatu to WellingtonFine today. Showers developing overnight, mainly north of Wellington, turning to widespread rain tomorrow night.
  • Gisborne to WairarapaFine, with high cloud tomorrow.
  • Marlborough to SouthlandFine today, apart from showers about coastal Southland. Extensive high cloud tomorrow, with scattered rain near the Main Divide.
  • Nelson and BullerFine about Nelson City but a few showers further west. Widespread rain developing later tomorrow.
  • Westland and FiordlandShowers turning to heavy rain tomorrow morning.
  • Chatham IslandsShowers clearing tomorrow morning.

  • SundayNorth Island, fine in the east with northwesterlies rising to severe gale in the south. Cloudy in the west with showers. South Island, heavy rain in the west, mostly fine in the east with northwesterlies rising to severe gale in exposed places.
  • MondayNorth Island, rain for most with heavy falls from Taranaki to Auckland, but only light falls in the east. Strong northwesterlies easing south of Ruapehu. South Island, rain in the west with heavy falls, mostly fine in the east, but showers developing south of Oamaru. Northwesterlies easing.
  • TuesdayNorth Island, rain or showers. Southeasterlies developing in the south. South Island, rain easing in the west. Scattered rain in eastern areas, with southeast winds.
  • Chatham IslandsOn Sunday, cloudy with strong southwesterlies turning gale northwesterly. Monday brings showers and lighter westerlies. On Tuesday, showers and a change to southeasterlies.

Severe weather was experienced over much of the country. A violent thunderstorm occurred over Auckland and a shop in Symonds Street had its front blown in, meanwhile, a violent hailstorm, with stones the size of marbles lasted for 20 minutes over Timaru. Snow settled in Dunedin and Invercargill and a few flakes fell in Hokitika.
