  • ThursdayNorth Island, showers in most places, and cloudier about Gisborne and Hawkes Bay, showers clearing from Wanganui to Wairarapa and Wellington. South Island, remaining showers in the north clearing, then fine apart from areas of cloud in the east.
  • FridayMainly fine, but a few showers in Gisborne and Hawkes Bay and in inland areas. Drizzle developing about the fiords.
  • SaturdayMostly fine in the north and east. Cloud increasing in western areas from Taranaki southwards, and drizzle spreading from the south, turning to rain in Westland and Fiordland.
  • Chatham IslandsCloudy periods with a few light showers through Saturday. Northerlies developing on Friday, and freshening on Saturday.

Weather History

Feb 15 1989

Heavy rain fell over southern New Zealand. As a result, a landslide 50 metres long closed State Highway 6 near Queenstown. The Shotover River rose 10 metres at one point, preventing jet boat and rafting operations. The Clinton River in the Milford Sound changed course during the downpour.
