In the west from Waikato and Bay of Plenty down to WellingtonMainly fine. Areas of morning fog or frost.
Gisborne to WairarapaShowers, clearing south of Napier this morning and further north this evening.
Nelson and BullerCloudy periods, with isolated showers clearing this morning.
Westland and FiordlandFine at first. Cloud increasing this afternoon and patchy drizzle developing south of the Glaciers tonight.
Marlborough, Canterbury, Otago and SouthlandMainly fine. Areas of cloud in Marlborough and a few showers about Stewart Island, clearing this morning. Coastal cloud in Canterbury tonight.

SaturdayShowers developing in northern Taranaki, but remaining dry elsewhere over the North Island. For the South Island, rain developing in the south and west with some heavy falls for Westland and Fiordland. Rain developing in Nelson but dry elsewhere.
SundayRain spreading to most North Island places. Northwest gales developing about Wellington and the Wairarapa. For the South Island, rain easing along the West Coast, but spreading to most other places for a time. A period of northwest gales for many eastern and southern parts.
MondayOutbreaks rain affecting much of northern New Zealand. Elsewhere over the North Island, showers in the west, becoming fine in the east from Gisborne to Wairarapa. Over the South Island, showers affecting most places, but fine spells for Nelson and inland parts of Marlborough.
Chatham IslandsBecoming fine on Saturday with freshening northerlies. Cloudy on Sunday with northerlies strengthening. Some rain on Monday. Northwesterly winds.

Jul 29 1962

A Taradale man broke his ankle when he and several other people were swept off their feet by a huge wave which tore across the wall at the foot of the Napier Breakwater. Hundreds of people watched the huge seas from vantage points around the wharves.
