  • Western areas from Northland to Wellington, also Coromandel, Taumarunui, TaihapeFine, but cloud increasing this evening. Some patchy morning drizzle from Waitomo to Kapiti, then becoming mostly fine again south of Waikato.
  • The remainder of the North IslandFine, apart from isolated showers inland tomorrow afternoon for Wairarapa and Gisborne. Westerly gales, severe with gusts 120 km/h between Hastings and Eketahuna overnight and tomorrow morning, then easing.
  • Buller to FiordlandRain in Fiordland with some heavy falls. Rain spreading to Westland and Buller today. Tomorrow, becoming fine in Westland and cloudy areas lingering elsewhere.
  • Nelson, Marlborough, Canterbury and OtagoFine. Northwest gales in exposed eastern places, easing overnight or tomorrow morning.
  • SouthlandCloudy with scattered rain, clearing tomorrow afternoon or evening. Westerly gales in exposed places, easing tomorrow afternoon.
  • Chatham IslandsFine, but cloud increasing tonight. A periof of rain early tomorrow morning, then showers.

  • SaturdayNorth Island, rain spreading north to most areas, but only drizzle in the far north. South Island, rain with heavy falls in the west, gradually easing from the south.
  • SundayNorth Island, rain for most places, but brief falls in the east. South Island, rain in the west, easing to showers. Just a few showers or patchy rain elsewhere.
  • Chatham IslandsOn Friday, early showers clearing with strong southwest winds tending northwest and strengthening later. Showers developing early Saturday, turning to rain from afternoon and southwesterlies easing for a time. Rain easing to a few showers on Sunday.

Northwesterly gales blew trees down, and caused damage to buildings and fences over eastern South Island areas. Many large trees where blown down and iron ripped off buildings inland from Kaikoura. Hay bales were rolled 100 metres in paddocks and many haysheds were lost.
