The north of the country narrowly escaped tornadoes during a cold front which brought thunderstorms to the North Island while snowfall closed South Island roads overnight.

Snow-laden branches fell over power lines in areas of the hill country west of Hawke's Bay, cutting power supplies to large areas. Snowfalls of up to 30cm deep in some areas made it difficult for repair gangs to get in and restore the supply. Some families were stranded in their homes.
