Rivers burst their banks in many western and central regions,bringing floods, road and rail closures and damage to property, notably in Buller, the Marlborough Sounds and Wairarapa. Featherston, Greytown and Martinborough all became isolated by floodwaters, and a state of civil emergency was declared in Wanganui.
