Situation: A high over New Zealand is moving away to the east. A trough over the Tasman Sea will spread a strong northerly flow over much of New Zealand on Friday, turning northwest on Saturday. The trough moves away to the east on Sunday.

Forecast: For the Manukau and Waitemata Harbours: Today: Variable 5 knots. Sea smooth. Fine weather. Tomorrow: Variable 5 knots, becoming northeast 10 knots during the morning. Rising to 15 knots in the evening. Smooth sea, becoming slight during the morning. Fine, with cloud gradually increasing during the day. For the Hauraki Gulf and for Bream Head to Cape Colville: Today: Southerly 10 knots, tending southeast tonight. Sea slight. Fine weather. Tomorrow: Southeast 10 knots becoming northeast during the morning. Rising to 15 knots in the evening. Sea slight. Cloud increasing during the day, and a few showers with fair visibility developing in the evening.
Outlook: Outlook until midnight Sunday: Friday: Northeast rising to 25 knots. Showers. Saturday: Northerly rising to 35 knots in exposed places for a time, easing later. Rain at times. Sunday: Southerly 10 knots. Fine weather.

A three kilometre stretch of the Tairei River at Henley,southwest of Dunedin, was covered in ice. A local said "...you can throw stones on it and they slide along. My husband saw a pukeko land on the ice and it slid right across the river and hit the bank". The ice followed a week of heavy frosts.
