Struck by the full force of a 95 kph nor'westerly gale, the 10 metre, six-tonne spire of the wooden Roman Catholic church at Washdyke, near Timaru crashed through a dozen power lines to the ground in almost a complete wreck. The church had stood for 50 years at Waimate and was in the process of being re-erected at Washdyke.
