A huge trough of low pressure in the Tasman Sea was responsible for a twenty four hour rainfall of 289.2mm at the Hermitage, near Mt Cook.Milford recorded 244.5mm from the same system. Meanwhile at Lower Hutt,lightning knocked out a radio transmitter for 30 minutes, and set fire to a church.
