A fierce southwesterly gale with rain and hail caused havoc amongst the tents of relief workers camped at a beach near Auckland early in the morning. Only six tents out of 33 were left standing. "Suitcases and kitbags were whisked away, their contents being scattered over neighbouring fields. Many of the tents were ruined, the fabric being ripped to shreds."
